The characters and the stories presented in DESAPARECIDOS are inspired by people and real facts, but their description and characterization is totally the result of imagination.
In the writing of the event numerous liberties have been taken, especially as regards the characterization of the characters, the images used and the succession of the various events, which never claim to reflect the reality of the facts or behavior of historical characters.
The interpretation of the players and the evolution of the narrative will lead to moments and events quite distant from historical reality.
It is not intention of the authors to express any specific position or to make judgments on specific facts that actually occurred -except to condemn the use of any form of violence by anyone- nor to diminish in any way the historical and personal tragedy of the Chilean people and thousands of families involved in the drama of the desaparecidos.
Teaser:
Two years ago Manuel rose from his desk at Punto Final and chose to resist . Walking on the streets of Santiago, from what his eyes saw, what he witnessed went into his pen and a stream of words began to flow for Chile deserves the deepest truth, among the lies and the silence. With ink and printed paper, he’s the voice of the people. With a straight, unbent back that blackjack couldn’t break, with free hands that questioning couldn’t mutilate, he writes. But being a witness to the light, can get close to the death's shadow.
Relations:
One year ago he interviewed Andrei Pascal Allende, a symbol on the armed fight against the regime. He learned that man like him are worthy of any sacrifice. Marcia Scantlebury used to work for him at Punto Final, but her articles were unproved rubbish. He published a few papers from Gustavo Ruiz an educated man, but then stopped, as he has dangerous extremist ideas.
#45 - Doctor Alejandro Romero, The doctor of the worthlesses (Character played by F. F.)
Motto:
Do what you have to do and go where you have to go: I too will see what I can do, if I can still do something, where I will end up, if indeed I will end up somewhere. Alignment: The dissidents - Group: The MIR - Nationality: Chile - Gender: Male - Player's Age: any age - DISCLAIMER: Disclaimer:

Teaser:
Raised with strong Christian values, Doctor Romero is a fervent and militant pacifist. With his rainbow-coloured scarf around his neck and his doctor's bag under his arm he roams Santiago's streets, looking for people in need of help and medical care. His job in the hospital is not enough for him, he knows that he is required elsewhere, where only the kind-hearted people dare to go. It's the right thing to do and it fufills his life, a life spent to help the poors and the needy. Sometimes other doctors make fun of him, telling that he's like Saint Francis but, to be honest, Romero quite enjoys those words: is the only quirk he allows himself in a life without vanity, where all that matters is the help he can give to the others.
Relations:
He met Fernando Buendia Olivarez at college. He knows that he now works for the Government. Alejandro is not mad at him, but he truly hopes that Olivarez will change his mind. Marcia Scantlebury is a strong woman, but it's a sensitive time for her and she's more fragile than ever. Father Omar Venturelli Lionelli and him are like twins, they share the same devotion to the humblest and many he provided care for the sick poors. Buenaventura used to live in his neighbourhood, but now she is working far from Santiago; when she comes home she looks distant and scared.
#46 - Andrés Pascal Allende, The slave to the Cause (Character played by I. G.)

I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life.

Teaser:
Being a hero is a duty if you bear the late President's name, if you are an Allende. An hero would get used to living on the edge, sleeping with a machine gun in one hand and the red flag clasped in the other. A hero would know how to live with his own fate, with his heart pounding in the throat, with the sour sweat running into his eyes and the awareness that any breath could be the last one. Unfortunate is the land that needs heroes and unlucky is the one to whom a cruel fate granted such a honor. Because no history book will ever speak of the fear freezing Pascal's blood and of the end looming as an ultimate, final, liberation.
Relations:
After the Junta took power, he gave an interview to Manuel Cabieses Donoso lashing out all his rage. He’s worried that his position in the MIR might endanger his mother Laura Allende. A few years back, while he was sitting with friends, a religious nut Juan Felipe Cristobal, threatened him with a knife, blabbling something about hell and communists.
#47 - Laura Allende, The mother to the Cause (Character played by V. K.)

Teaser: Pompous Laura walked, boasting the Allende’s name and enjoying the golden light radiating from her brother Salvador and his position of power. Then one morning there was smoke and rubble, her life crumbled and that bright dawn became a mournful sunset. But her name survived like a death sentence and a curse, both idolized and loathed, a bulwark of resistance and a lineage to suppress. And to think that Laura only wanted a peaceful life for herself and her son Andrés Pascal… But in this cruel time, even life is a luxury.
Relations: She loves her son Andres Pascal more than anything and would give her life for him. She is friend with Ofelia Distal who is also her confidant. In Santiago she recently met Paul Schafer a charming land owner. He’s reserved, but also polite and educated.

Teaser:
So many memories fill Hector’s soul: the warm mid-winter afternoons spent talking about politics and freedom in a cafè, his job as a Sociology Professor. So many dreams fill Hector’s heart… the red flags under September’s wind, people chanting Allende’s name, Ofelia’s bright eyes, the party meetings and the raw joy of being called “dad” for the first time. Then another September came, and as cruel as autumn is, took away any dream of a spring that would never come, not on that 1973, not ever. His dreams of freedom are now buried deeply, under the icy fear of losing everything he has dearest.
Relations:
He would do anything to protect his family, his wife Ofelia Distal and their daughter Manuelita. He can count of his neighbour brotherly friendship: even if he and Umberto Edgardo Mewes belong to a different social class, they care for each other. He reported Juan Felipe Cristobal and made him leave the University's grounds: that lunatic used to preach about how God’s wrath burning sins away in the heathens hideout he believed the University to be.

Teaser:
Ofelia wants anything and everything: her husband love, the milky scent of dear Manuelita’s kisses, her safe job at the Ministry. But nothing is mote intoxicating than money to her. Dollars, pesos, liras that flow under her eyes every day at work. With money you can buy anything: men, ideas, affection. Ofelia knows that the future will claim its toll with an unstoppable strength and booming voice, like that day when the artillery bley and la Moneda crumbled, on that morning, when everything changed.
Relations:
Her husband Hector Hernan Gonzales Osorio gave her everything a woman could aspire to: a family, a nice house and love. She uses to meet at a cafè with Laura Allende they are friends and confidants. She feels guilty towards Osvaldo Romo: he used to live nearby and they were friends, but his life hasn’t been as easy as hers.

Teaser: Adriana gave up herself into being a mother, a wife, a friend and a lover, an accomplice and a partner. She always did her best to satisfy Umberto and their daughter Marisol. She followed her husband to political meetings and took care of the child. Still, in Umberto’s eyes, she doesn’t see anymore the sweet love that once burned there, only dissatisfaction. And so Adriana feels she isn’t enough: not beautiful enough, or loyal to the cause, not enough motherly, firm and efficient. She’s unfit to a life, to a man, to a role. These failed expectations are a chain heavier than the holy vows binding and strangling her.
Relations: Umberto Edgardo Mewes is her husband, but things are not working between them. A few years back, nurse Maria Elena Soza saved her husband’s leg after a work accident. Since then they are good friends. She admires deeply Michelle Bachelet and would like to be so strong, passionate and fearless.

Teaser:
Since curfew, Umberto Edgardo has been leaving his factory with his low head and quick steps. Speaking up his mind was a folly he’s dearly paying living in fear, hurrying up to get back home to his wife Adriana and their daughter Marisol. Almost jumping whenever he hears a noise or spots someone unfamiliar in the streets. This is no life. It’s a daily routine made of suspicion, diffidence, silence and scare, of sham and chains. The same iron links he helped forging, now bend his shoulders and clench his throat, strangling him.
Relations:
He’s eyes are no longer shining as they did when he and his wife Adriana Urrutia Assenjo were young. Maria Elena Soza is the nurse who saved his leg after a bad accident, years before. Hector Hernan Gonzales Osorio is more than a friend, he’s like a brother. They are neighbours, and even if they come from a different social class, they deeply respect each other.

Teaser:
It's not easy being a woman as Mrs Jaria de Bachelet is: an educated anthropologist, an expert of human nature. She’s not the stereotypical chilean woman and mother, quiet and obedient. She proudly offers her daughter Michelle and example of emancipation and freedom to follow, but as she found herself with an absent husband, alone and with no help, she felt lost and powerless, as any woman dealing with a rebellious child would. As fear prickles her most sensible strings, it also quickly turns love into grudge, lies into half truths, damnation into salvation.
Relations:
Michelle Bachelet is her daughter. Since she enrolled into university she’s changed and Angela fears for her. She’s been knowing Alba Pinera since many years and still remembers fondly all their chatting at Alba’s family mansion. Gonzalo Santelices Cuevas is also a longstanding friend; they used to be very close.

Teaser:
The smell of fresh grass and the stink of fear, the fiery passion and the cold terror, friendly hands caressing the skin and harsh ones violating the body. The prayers and the screams, the blind anger and the resigned desperation. Cold, tears, blood, sweat and insanity. Poetry is a catharsis for Carmen, an excruciating thought from a past long gone. Today there is death and a mournful silence, and the pen that once danced at the tune of democracy and freedom, is forever broken.
Relations:
At her book presentation she met Professor Gustavo Ruiz who asked her to sign his copy; he was enthusiast of her work.
Marcia Scantlebury is a dear friend who always encouraged her to give a soul to her thoughts and poetry. She fondly remembers a childhood friend Rosa Humilde Ramos a kind and gentle girl; now that girl stands beyond an abyss.

Teaser:
Sometimes life asks for a fight, until the last breath. Marcia began her struggle at Punto Final, the newspaper she worked for, where her bravery only met fear, indifference and convenience. Her ideals broke against a stronger wall that only bombs will destroy where her pen failed. Sometimes life asks to marry a rifle, cradle a knife between the breasts, plan an attack with other MIR comrades. What life also ask is to drown sorrow when these brothers and sister in arms die. Life asks to never surrender, even when the pain for such losses is not the only wight one carries.
Relations:
She left Punto Final because Manuel Cabieses Donoso never liked her provocative articles and dind’t want to publish anything against the Government. Lately, she often turns to Doctor Alejandro Romero as the fight is taking its toll on her and she needs medical attentions. Teaser:
Revolutionary minister, street priest, shelter to the last and the humblest. The salesian has been defined in many ways, but if asked Omar Venturelli would say is just a man, a father. Even if he’s respectful and dutiful, he also lives far from the golden wealth of the Church, as well as from some of the official positions of the Holy See. He lives his call in his own way, walking among the people, living among them. The only way to nurture faith in God and to be faithful to his mission, is to give a voice to those that otherwise would be unheard. At them, everyone should listen, everyone should lend help, everyone should stand beside. For Jesus said “the last shall be first, and the first last”.
Relations:
He usually ignores Enrique Alvear Urrutia when he starts lecturing him about how he should behave. Doctor Romero is a good friend and together they make a great team; they both have made helping the less fortunate their own cause. During a protest he met Juana Francisca Ramirez and Ramon Valdez, a young couple fighting alongside each other for a right cause.

Teaser:
Blanca cradles her rifle as a child would with her favorite doll singing a rebellious lullaby. Her eyes are fierce, her smile is the unbreakable one of youth as she runs to a smoky basement, where she and her comrades print flyers speaking of revolution, armed fight and freedom. On a bright summer day, Blanca left her toys and her father’s mansion without looking back, her head held high, marching off to a red horizon. Red as her flag, red as the blood she would drown her innocence into. Is this the rightful price to pay for? If it is, then, let there be blood.
Relations:
She despises her father Jorge Alfonsin for working alongside the Junta. When she still lived with him, before joining the MIR, she met at a formal dinner Nelida Gutierrez Rivera a social climber who betrayed her people. Teaser:
A nice mansion, couture dresses and galas: Amelia lives an upscale life, never asking, all deserving. She shares her fortune with the poors, those in need, organizing fundraising dinners, financing charity events, blaming her friends’ indifference and being the patroness of a soup kitchen run by the nuns. For many of her powerful friends charity is only one of her eccentric entertainments, one less interesting that her being able to speak with the dead. A woman of rare Christian morality, she smiles listening when she’s complimented on her good heart, and gracefully complies, when asked to show her talent.
Relations:
She once asked Josè Lopez Olivares to run a clinic for the less fortunate, but he laughed at her, telling her that if he’d wanted to be in charity business, then he’d be a priest. Teaser:
She tried to bury under the ashes that tiny sparkle that kept coming to life; then a breath, slow and deep, kindled the flame that took fire. She wielded, to the sweet burning of passion, taking his hand, following him into clandestine meetings. Basements became the alcove for lovers, the red flag a blanket for their love. Promises exchanged in the dark, shared revolutionaries dreams, fingers tied and fists raised. Red the cause, red their love, red the cause she married alongside him. Yesterday, today and ‘till death do them part, in sacred vow that binds them. Until the time of choices will come, to shatter dreams and illusions.

Ramon always despised the fearful, the hypocrites, those who hide under the comfortable blankets of power like the worst whore. By day his eyes are lowered on the pages his hands carefully turn, by night his eyes are wide open and alert, and in his hands wield a crowbar. No fear, convenience, or apathy can justify being on the wrong side of the war that Ramon fights. Come the morning fear will rise, but the night flows, passion blossoms, adrenalin pumps blood in his veins, and life is worth living for.
Relations:
Juana Francisca is his fiance. They met at the university and she’s now into politics as well. During a protest he met Father Omar Venturelli Lionelli, a fiery priest with a booming, unstoppable voice. Alicia Gomez used to be a classmate, but then they fell apart.

It is not intention of the authors to express any specific position or to make judgments on specific facts that actually occurred -except to condemn the use of any form of violence by anyone- nor to diminish in any way the historical and personal tragedy of the Chilean people and thousands of families involved in the drama of the desaparecidos.
